Rock Garden

The Ryoanji rock garden is famous for its utter beauty and ultimate zen spirit. The rock garden is a size of 247.9 square meters (296.5 square yards), and 15 rocks of variable size and shape are set on white sand using sophisticated design method.

You can't look at all of rocks once from any direction, except one direction (the centre of Hojo where is in front of the garden). It is not known who created it, when, how or for what reason.

However,

The temple was be designated a World Heritage Site in 1994 as a part of Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. And since Zen boom occured in Western countries, it's been so popular among foreigners.

Main hall

Situated in Gion area, the shrine is familiar to local people in Kyoto called "Gion-san" through the ages.

Gion Festival in Kyoto is one of the three biggest festivals in Japan; festival of Yasaka Shrine said to have originated in an attempt to secure protection from a plague toward the end of the ninth century.

During the festival, from "Kippu-iri" on 1 July to "Eki-jinja Nagoshi-sai" on 31 July, a wide variety of shrine rituals and events are held.

Other popular events include Okera-sai and Setsubun-sai. Okera-sai is a New Year ceremony; holy flame is lit to the lanterns in the shrine at 19:00 on 31 December and is burned with Okera-gi (sticks of firewood) until early morning on 1 January.

Okera-mairi is one of the typical sights on winter's day in Kyoto; it's to go home, swinging a burning match cord by the holy flame.

The holy flame named Okera-bi is used for zoni (soup containing mochi, vegetables and other ingredients such as chicken or seafood) to protect a person from illness throughout the year.

Kiyomizu-dera

My favourite temple in Kyoto. I never get tired of the temple. I like not only this temple but also the surrounding area; from the temple to Yasaka shrine through Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka.

The main hall and the stage rebuilt in 1633 have been designated as a national treasure and the view from the stage is spectacular. Actually the dance in dedication to the god of the shrine is performed on the stage. In 1994, the temple was also added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

Inside the temple grounds, there is a spring, "Otowa Waterfall", continuing to gush out for over a thousand years. Located at the base of the main hall, its waters are divided into three separate streams.

Each stream's water is said to have a different benefit, from your right hand, for health, beauty and a successful career (benefit to cause longevity, success at school and a fortunate love life are for tourists). However, drinking from all three streams is considered greedy and your wish won't be granted.

Behind the main hall stands Jishu Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. In front of the shrine are two stones named love fortune-telling stones, placed 18m (19.68yd) apart.

Successfully finding your way from one to the other with your eyes closed is said to bring luck in finding love. If you can succeed at your first try, also you'll succeed in love soon.

If you try more than 1 time before becoming successful, it'll take time to succeed in love. Besides someone guides you from one stone to the other, that is interpreted to mean that an intermediary will be needed in your love life as well.
